The Noguchi Museum, in Long Island City, New York, held its Annual
Benefit Dinner on May 17, 2012. This year’s event featured a performance by
singer-songwriter, poet, writer, and artist Patti Smith.
Following cocktails in the Museum’s sculpture garden, guests were treated
to a performance by Ms. Smith, accompanied by her daughter, pianist and
composer Jesse Paris Smith. Highlights included her classic hit Because theNight, new material—including two songs written by Ms. Smith and her
daughter especially for the performance—and a reading of Isamu Noguchi’s
own writing. Afterwards, guests enjoyed a seated dinner in the galleries.
The evening included a silent auction of an untitled drawing by Willem de
Kooning. All proceeds benefited the Museum and its programs.
More than 200 guests, including artists, trustees and friends of the Museum,
and representatives of the larger arts and cultural community joined Ms.
Smith; benefit co-chairs Lisa de Kooning and Priscilla Morgan; Noguchi
Museum Board Chairman David Holbrook and his wife, Andrea Holbrook;
and Museum Director Jenny Dixon. Guests included legendary jazz musicianOrnette Coleman, artist Mark di Suvero, Olivier Berggruen, Hugh and Tiziana Hardy, Socrates Sculpture Park Director John Hatfield, Hayden and Heath Herrera, Rachel Horovitz, Lucy Lamphere, Malcolm and Jennifer Nolen, Toshiko Mori and Jamie Carpenter, Joumana Rizk, artist Joel Shapiro, Storm King Art Center President John P. Stern, Michael Stipe,
Blanton Museum of Art Director Simone Wicha, and stage director and
playwright Robert Wilson, among others.
