NYU Langone Medical Center announced today that the KiDS of NYU Foundation, Inc. raised $1.3 million at its 20th anniversary gala - the 2011 Springfling - held Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at the Plaza Hotel. This year’s event honored David S. Feldman, MD, chief, Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center’s Hospital for Joint Diseases, for his extraordinary contributions to the field of pediatric orthopaedic surgery.
Dr. Feldman has been a leader in the care of children, treating severe limb deformities as well as hard-to-heal fractures and other serious bone defects. Two former patients, ages 10 and 13, and the grateful parent of another patient, took the podium to share their stories about the life-changing surgical treatment they had received from Dr. Feldman and his team. Their heartfelt tributes, which culminated in enthusiastic applause, portrayed a man whose talent as a surgeon is matched by compassion for his patients.
Special guests in attendance included: Faye and Heather Baker, Dr. Elisabeth Cohen and Dr. Robert I. Grossman, Trudy Elbaum Gottesman, First Deputy Mayor Patti Harris and Mark Lebow, Antonio Magliocco, Jr. and Carla Solomon, PhD, Lisa Pevaroff and Gary Cohn, Jane Rosenthal, Wendy Siegel, Alice and Tom Tisch, Billie Tisch, and Susi and Peter Wunsch. Event Co-chairs were Patty Newburger and Brad Wechsler.
Alice Tisch, chair of KiDS of NYU, expressed the organization’s thanks to the friends and supporters who packed the Plaza’s Grand Ballroom for the gala. “I am thrilled to be here at such an exciting time and honored to know Dr. David Feldman. He is a terrific example of what is best about pediatrics at NYU Langone. Most importantly, he has given countless children a chance at healthier, happier lives,” said Mrs. Tisch.
While addressing the guests, Dr. Grossman, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center, said, “I’m personally inspired by so many of you here tonight - including founding chair Dr. Carla Solomon, without whom none of this would have been possible and current board chair, and my friend Alice Tisch. I share your pride in all you have helped us accomplish to date, and we thank and congratulate all of you on your twentieth anniversary. I always feel special pride in the physicians who are honored at events like these. It’s incredibly moving to witness how deeply great doctors change and improve the lives of patients and their families, and I’m thrilled to be part of this evening’s tribute to Dr. David Feldman.”
Dr. Grossman also recognized Catherine S. Manno, MD, the Pat and John Rosenwald Professor of Pediatrics and chair, Department of Pediatrics, “whose warmth, enthusiasm and leadership have been so central to building a powerhouse team, and who has already succeeded so brilliantly in attracting top-flight new specialists to our Medical Center.”
Founded in 1991 by a group of parents and pediatric physicians, KiDS is unique among pediatric philanthropic efforts in that it provides funds to inpatient and outpatient programs that serve children across NYU Langone Medical Center. Today, KiDS is helping establish a strong foundation for a new children’s hospital that will further advance NYU Langone’s tradition of excellence in children’s health, research and education. Gifts from KiDS help build and strengthen vital programs and services, including pediatric medical and surgical care, and including specialty areas like the Division of Pediatric Cardiology.
