NYU Cancer Institute at NYU Langone Medical Center, an NCI-designated cancer center, raised $3.2 million in unrestricted funds at its annual gala on October 3, 2011. The event took place at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and honored Robert H. Benmosche, president and chief executive officer, American International Group, Inc. and Abraham Chachoua, MD, the Jay and Isabel Fine Associate Professor of Oncology, for their contributions to cancer research.
Each year the Cancer Institute Gala is held to celebrate the physicians, scientists, nurses and medical personnel at the cancer center for their longstanding excellence in education, research and patient care. Funds raised are used to support the Cancer Institute’s remarkable progress in the fight against cancer on all levels: patient care, research, education, and prevention.
In addressing the crowd of over 600 guests, Robert I. Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center said, “We thank you all for your generous support of the NYU Cancer Institute. Your contributions help us to continue to conduct breakthrough research that advance the prevention and treatment of cancer across the world and make our clinical care increasingly effective and personal. We are thrilled to celebrate our honorees with you tonight and to recognize the remarkable faculty and staff who give so much of themselves in serving our patients.”
Those in attendance included: Film director Roger Spottiswoode, Dr. Robert I. Grossman and Dr. Elisabeth Cohen, Lori and Larry Fink, Dr. Silvia Formenti, Gloria and Richard Kushel, Kenneth G. Langone, chairman of the board of trustees, NYU Langone Medical Center, and his wife Elaine, Sandy and Ed Meyer, Laurie Perlmutter, Tracy and Stanley Shopkorn, Connie and Martin Silver, Debora and Jes Staley, and Cynthia and Jan van Eck.
Lori Fink, chair of the NYU Cancer Institute Advisory Board and trustee of NYU Langone Medical Center since 2003, explained that “human touch” is at the core of the NYU Cancer Institute, saying, “Over and over again, our physicians, scientists and caregivers begin with the patient... and we never lose sight of the knowledge that although every patient is unique, we all share the need for compassion, support, respect and love,” She concluded, “ It's a simple formula...it's a formula for excellence. And I’m grateful to all of our guests for being here tonight and for your support of this crucial cause.”
Mrs. Fink also recognized the event honorees and the director of the NYU Cancer Institute, William Carroll, MD, the Julie and Edward J. Minskoff Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Oncology, professor of pathology, for their compassion, support and commitment to addressing cancer research, education, prevention and clinical care.
