NYU Cancer Center Institute, an NCI-designated cancer center, raised nearly $1.4 million in unrestricted funds at its annual gala held on October 5, 2010. The event took place at the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan and honored Silvia Formenti, MD, the Sandra and Edward H. Meyer Professor of Radiation Oncology and chair of Radiation Oncology at NYU Langone, for her extraordinary contributions to cancer research and care.
Each year the Cancer Institute Gala is held to celebrate the physicians, scientists, nurses and medical personnel at the cancer center for their longstanding excellence in education, research and patient care. Funds raised are used to support the Cancer Institute’s remarkable progress in the fight against cancer on all levels: patient care, research, education, and prevention.
Those in attendance included: Film director Roger Spottiswoode, Dr. Robert I. Grossman and Dr. Elisabeth Cohen, Lori and Larry Fink, Helen Kimmel, Kenneth G. Langone, chairman of the board of trustees, NYU Langone Medical Center, and his wife Elaine, Anne McNulty, Sandy and Ed Meyer, Laurie Perlmutter, Louise and Joshua Samuelson, Tracy and Stanley Shopkorn, Debora and Jes Staley, and Laurie Tisch.
In addressing the crowd of over 450 guests, Robert I. Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of the Medical Center said, “The NYU Cancer Institute is gathering fantastic momentum—in research breakthroughs, in the depth and scope of clinical expertise, in the extended availability of treatment hours and in community presence. We are thrilled to celebrate the exceptional physicians and scientists being recognized this evening who encapsulate
what the Cancer Institute is about: interweaving patient care and science to find new and better answers for those who are suffering.” Dr. Grossman also expressed his gratitude to the guests for their generous contributions which will allow the Cancer Institute to continue to make discoveries that will make life better for future generations as we take our findings from bench to bedside.
Lori Fink, Chair of the NYU Cancer Institute Advisory Board, and trustee of NYU Langone Medical Center since 2003, said, “We are thrilled to celebrate our immensely gifted honoree, Silvia Formenti, whose innovations in science and clinical care are nothing short of groundbreaking.
