On October 1, 2011, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston held the 2011 Grand Gala Ball: An Egyptian Fantasy. Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Hevrdejs were the Ball Chairmen and Grand Underwriters. Over $1.4 million was raised at this year’s Ball.

The Egyptian Fantasy theme that Michelle and Frank Hevrdejs selected set the tone of the black-tie gala. Nearly 500 guests who walked into the museum were transported into another time. The ladies wore Egyptian-inspired gowns, palm tree decor by Johnathan Andrew Sage created an oasis, and the walls were covered with projections of ancient Egypt by Pro Sound. Cleopatras welcomed guests at the door and led them to their seats, to the “Tut Lounge”, or to the silent auction room.  The 45 tables were covered in alternating blue and gold linens.  Each place setting had a King Louis Cobalt Blue wine goblet matched with majestic cobalt blue and gold plates.  Darryl and Co. created the centerpieces for each table; alternating King Tut and Nefertiti busts surrounded by grasses, leaves, and touches of dark florals such as “James Story” orchids and blue thistle.

A three-course seated dinner fit for a pharaoh was catered by Jackson & Company. The menu consisted of a Lake Qaroun duck salad (confit of duck with a salad of red oak in a sherry vinaigrette with chevre, toasted pistachios and pita chips), followed by a filet mignon of prime aged angus beef (beef wrapped with a green leek ribbon, roasted to medium rare and served with a drizzle of truffle oil and garnished with black truffle butter accompanied by a potato leek tart and grilled herb zucchini). At the top of this royal “food pyramid” was a decadent dessert named the great pyramid of Khufu (chocolate cake filled with crushed almond cookies and mascarpone crème, embellished with a hidden treasure)! Each course was paired with a wine.

During dessert, surprise guest Adam Nowicki, a Steve Martin impersonator, performed the “King Tut” act from Saturday Night Live. Guests then danced the night away to the tunes of L.A. based 14-piece  band, Sensation Show Band, on their choice of two dance floors, one on the main level and one on the second level along the railing in Upper Brown Pavilion.

The silent auction included fabulous trips and original, Egyptian-inspired jewelry created by Houston jeweler Wayne Smith.
