On February 1, 2010, Gillian Miniter hosted a juice and cookies party at Manhattan’s Corner Bookstore, 93rd and Madison, to celebrate the publication day of her friend Karen LeFrak’s third children’s book Best in Show with endearing illustrations by Andrew Day.
It was far from the nicest winter day, snow and freezing rain, but that didn’t stop the children who brought their parents to meet Mrs. LeFrak, Gem the poodle-star of the book and her sire, the retired champion, white Standard Poodle Ch. Ale Kai Mikimoto on Fifth, or Miki to his fans. Everyone lined up to have Mrs. LeFrak autograph their books and to enjoy the delicious poodle-shaped cookies from the popular Eleni’s New York. During the hour and a half she signed books, the Bookstore sold over a 100 copies.

Mrs. LeFrak, wife of Richard LeFrak president of the LeFrak Organization, is donating all her proceeds from the sales of Best in Show to the AKC Canine Health Foundation and Take The Lead.
AKC Canine Health Foundation develops resources for basic and applied health programs to improve the quality of life for dogs and their owners. Take the Lead provides direct services, support and care for people in the sport of purebred dogs who suffer life-threatening or terminal illness.
Best In Show is already a favorite of Glenn Close, Martha Stewart, Joan Rivers, Liz Smith and Sesame Street’s Carol-Lynn Parente, who says that the author “shares her love of canine competition and good sportsmanship, which kids are sure to love.” The book’s website www.karenlefrak.com itself is a treat complete with adorable child-friendly web games.
