The Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) held its Annual Palm Beach Scientific Seminar on Friday, March 19, 2010 at The Breakers. Co-chairs Pat Cook, Jackie Drake, Susan Keenan and Andrea Stark joined Founder & Chairman Audrey Gruss and guests to hear the latest information on depression research and treatment from leading medical experts.
High-profile guests included – HDRF founder and chairman, Audrey Gruss, Martin Gruss, Evelyn Lauder, Eleanora Kennedy, Darcy Gould, Edwina Sandys, Natalie Pray, John Mashek, Carol Mack, James Borynack, Lori Gendelman, Annette Friedland, Annabelle Coleman, Grace Meigher, Fernanda Niven, Chris Kellogg, Barbara Smith, Tina Bilotti, Vera Serrano, Wilma Bernstein, Stefania Conrad, Karen Clark and many more.
The recent headlines and controversy regarding the “Placebo Effect” of anti-depressants has brought psychiatry to the forefront of the news. Dr. Harold Koenigsberg, a psychiatrist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and HDRF Founding Board Member, addressed this important issue and explained that research has shown that the best method for treating depression is a combination of psychotherapy AND medication.
Dr. David H. Brendel, a leading clinical psychiatrist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, informed guests that depression has many variations and occurs simultaneously with other mood and emotional disorders.
The Seminar offered a rare opportunity for guests to hear first-hand from a patient dealing with depression. Dr. Laura De Luca, one of Palm Beach’s most prominent psychiatrists, interviewed an actual patient about her experience with depression and challenges in finding the right treatment.
Another innovative aspect of the event was HDRF’s introduction of a new, never-before-offered way for attendees to support the Foundation and ask their specific questions about emotional health. Purchase of higher-level tickets allowed guests to have unprecedented access to the medical speakers and panelists in private, one-on-one discussions so that they could deal with their most personal questions.
