Over 250 guests filled The Flagler Museum Pavilion in Palm Beach to attend the Eleventh Annual H.O.W. (Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper) Time is of the Essence Luncheon and Lecture on January 30, 2012Actress and ovarian cancer spokesperson Andie MacDowell along with Dr. Karen H. Lu, gynecologic oncologist from MD Anderson, were guest speakers for this fabulous event. Lori Gendelman, Cobey Rapaport, Anita Michaels and Ann Candido served as chairwomen of the luncheon. Frances Fisher and Fern Fodiman were honorary chairwomen.

Through her relationship with L'Oreal Paris, Andie MacDowell has been a spokesperson for ovarian cancer for many years.  She shared with the audience a little about her life and that one of the ways she feels fulfilled is by brining awareness of ovarian cancer to other women.  "I have taken it upon myself to reach out to organizations that support ovarian cancer awareness," MacDowell explains.  "Also, having been the face of a beauty line, it's been important for me to develop my interior life to feel that I have substance and something to offer the world beyond an image."

Those who attended were also educated and enlightened on some of the most up-to-date research in ovarian cancer.  Karen Lu, M.D. spoke about her main clinical interests which include the surgical and medical treatment of women with ovarian and endometrial cancers, as well as the management of women at genetically high risk for these cancers.  Dr. Lu is the co-director for Clinical Cancer Genetics and director of the High Risk Ovarian Cancer Screening Clinic.  She receives support for her research from NCI and private foundations and has published numerous articles and book chapters.

This special event helps raise funds so that H.O.W. can reach women in our community and beyond.  H.O.W. supporters make it possible to educate women about the early warning signs of this devastating disease and provide financial assistance to those who are in the fight of their lives. Supporters also make it possible to fund break-through ovarian cancer research and scholarships for medical students interested in a career in gynecologic oncology through the Dr. Robert C. Knapp Medical Student Award.

Some of those in attendance included: Betsy K. Mathews, Mark Cook, Dorothy Kohl, Dr. Melanie Bone, Dr. Gail Cooney, Frances Fisher, Trish Donnelley, and Alice and Cater Randolph.

Introductions were made by Dr. James W. Orr, Jr., Medical Director, Florida Gynecologic Oncology & Lee Center Care as well as Ted Furniss, Managing Director, Senior Investment Office at Wilmington Trust.

Major sponsor of the luncheon were Betsy K. Matthews and Wilmington Trust.
