From September 30 until October 2, Hearst Castle was filled with the legendary spirit of its heyday for the third annual Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation Benefit Weekend. William Randolph Hearst’s granddaughter, Anne Randolph Hearst McInerney, hosted social and entertainment notables at the famed San Simeon estate for a weekend of feasting, dancing and celebration. The weekend raised funds for the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to the restoration and upkeep of the collections and grounds of this National Historic Landmark.

On Friday night, guests arrived to a glamorous welcome – a champagne reception on the terrace of the Casa Grande followed by a screening in W.R. Hearst’s private movie theater. Guests were then ushered into the awe-inspiring Hearst Castle Refectory for a “Dinner at Eight” Hollywood Glamour banquet. Among the fifty diners were Anne Hearst McInerney and her husband, author Jay McInerney, who hosted legendary comedian Jon Lovitz and mutual friends Tony Peck and fiancée Paula Rice. From Los Angeles came Robert Bloomingdale and his wife Justine, Wendy Stark, Robert and Tina Gale, Curtis and Priscilla Tamkin and Thomas and Travis Kranz. San Franciscans in attendance included Joseph and Edith Tobin, Gregory and Kathy Hampton with children John Hampton and Cary Hampton, Timothy and Carolyn Ferris, William and Sako Fisher, Jeffrey and Darlene Anderson, Arthur and Louise Patterson and Cary Collins with Jana Spotts. Also making the journey to San Simeon were New Yorkers Candace Bushnell, George Farias, Jim Coleman and Cynthia Ott, Paola Bacchini and Arnold Rosenshein, Saturday Night Live’s Jim Signorelli, R. Couri Hay and Janna Bullock and Alison Mazzola. Hearst Castle Museum Director, Hoyt Fields addressed the group, giving a fascinating impromptu history lesson about the antique Flemish tapestries that drape the walls of the Refectory. Local wines from Brewer-Clifton and Melville vineyards complimented the gourmet feast and winery owner himself, Greg Brewer attended and enjoyed the libations he contributed for the weekend with guest Kerri Murray. Guests sat at a single banquet table adorned by LA floral icon David Jones at places marked by elegant menu cards designed by Dallas-based stationer, Bell’Invito.  The enchanted evening was captured by the lens of renowned photographer, Patrick McMullan.

Upon arrival to their respective hotels, each guest received a J.McLaughlin canvas tote bag silk-screened with the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation logo. The bags overflowed with luxury gifts and refreshments that helped to enhance the guests’ San Simeon experience. During his toast at the Friday feast, Jay McInerney joked that he was grateful for the necktie from Eton of Sweden as he had forgotten his back in New York.

On Saturday morning, early risers hiked to the shore of the Piedras Blancas to observe the resident Elephant Seal population. Later, the group enjoyed a luncheon on the lawn of the Hearst Ranch “Hacienda”. After lunch, guests were treated to a private tour of the castle led by Museum Director Hoyt Fields and the afternoon culminated with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to swim in the world famous Neptune Pool. During the swim, Fields invited guests to dip into the indoor Roman Pool as well, a treat never before experienced by guests at this annual affair. The Roman Pool is inspired by ancient Roman baths, ornamented floor to ceiling with one inch mosaic tiles that glimmer in the sunlight transporting visitors back in time. On Saturday evening, dressed in their Western best, the group was invited to a “Hearst Ranch Round-Up” at the Hearst Ranch Dairy Barn with live music and line dancing.
