On Monday March 7th, 2011, GMHC (www.gmhc.org) hosted its fourth annual culinary gala, SAVOR, at Gotham Hall. The gastronomic fundraiser attracted a high profile crowd of philanthropists and business leaders in support of honoree Joan Tisch who received the inaugural Judith Peabody Humanitarian Award. SAVOR spotlights the important role of the food and nutrition program at GMHC, one of the few AIDS service organizations in New York to offer hunger relief services as part of its array of care services.
Marjorie J. Hill, PhD, GMHC’s Chief Executive Officer, welcomed the 325 guests to New York’s iconic Gotham Hall. The evening was co-chaired by Elizabeth Peabody and Samuel Peabody, Laurie Tisch, Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch, and Steve Tisch. The Food Network’s Ted Allen returned as host for the evening, with Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell of The Fabulous Beekman Boys co-chairing the dinner.
The late Judith Peabody was a dedicated volunteer and life-long supporter of GMHC. In celebrating her life and recognizing her 30-year commitment to the fight against AIDS, the Judith Peabody Humanitarian Award was presented to Joan Tisch, for her extraordinary service, dedication, and support to GMHC. Judith Peabody’s daughter Elizabeth Peabody and her husband Samuel Peabody presented the distinguished award. Guests were treated to a very personal and loving video tribute dedicated to both women, featuring words from their families and produced by Judith’s nephew, Carter Peabody.
Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and a specially designed four-course dinner menu from some of New York’s most celebrated chefs, including Francois Payard of Francois Payard Bakery, Carmen Quagliata of Union Square Café, Peter Hoffman of Savoy, and Stephen Lewandowski of Tribeca Grill. Overall, the grand event raised over $650,000 to benefit GMHC’s work in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy.
