More than 350 women -- leaders of industry, media, government, and the arts – gathered on Friday, November 18, 2011 for the Citymeals-on-Wheels 25th annual “Power Lunch for Women” at The Pierre. This by-invitation-only benefit, emceed by Paula Zahn, raised $1.2 million or enough money to provide more than 190,000 meals for New York’s frail homebound aged.
Honored for almost 30 years of service as Citymeals-on-Wheels’ Founding Director was Marcia Stein. Though she stepped down in September, Stein remains active with the organization and serves on the Board of Directors. She is now an Adjunct Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Also honored for its generous support of Citymeals-on-Wheels was Travelers Insurance.
Among this year’s lunching ladies included Donatella Arpaia, Pamela Baxter, Kelly Bensimon, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Bobbi Brown, Dana Cowin, Laura Day, Michele Oka Doner, Patricia Duff, Dasha Epstein, Linda Fairstein, Betsy Gotbaum, Jamee Gregory, Donna Hanover, Joan Helpern, Caroline Hirsch, Dana Ivey, Gayle King, Rikki Klieman, Jessica Lappin, Barbara Lazaroff, Alexandra Lebenthal, Sandra Lee, Jennifer Lim, Zarela Martinez, Margo MacNabb Nederlander, Ruth Reichl, Denise Rich, Betty Rollin, Shari Scharfer-Rollins, Christina Steinbrenner, Gloria Steinem, Diana L. Taylor, Lizzie Tisch, Barbara Tober, Susan Ungaro, Lillian Vernon,
and Patricia Wexler, among others.
In a moving tribute to the plight of NYC’s homebound elderly, Brooke Shields, Gretchen Mol and Jan Maxwell read from a montage of poignant letters written by Citymeals’ recipients:
A few adventurous men buy the privilege of lunching with these powerful and famous women for an admission price of $10,000. This year’s “$10K Men” included Jeffrey Chodorow, Joseph M. Cohen, William Deutsch, Bill Fischer, Roger Foltynowicz, Robert Grimes, Michael Lynne, John Orrico, John Pomerantz, Dennis Riese, David Rockwell, John Shapiro, William T. Speck, MD, Myron Stein, Jonathan Tisch, Donald Tober, John Zaccaro and Steven B. Zavagli.
One hundred percent of the money raised from ticket and auction sales at Power Lunch, and all Citymeals’ events, goes to the preparation and delivery of nutritious meals to homebound elderly in the five boroughs of New York City.
