The Guild of the Chicago Botanic Garden held its Twelfth Annual Harvest Ball on September 25, 2010 on the beautiful, early fall grounds of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Over 500 guests attended the black tie garden
party, raising $375,000 for the Center for Teaching and Learning, which
provides educational programs for teachers and youth from pre-Kindergarten
through 12th grade. Through these programs, the Garden seeks to inspire a
life-long interest in science and respect for our environment.
Event co-chairs, Guild members Pim Alley of Lake Forest and Lisa Holstein of
Chicago, greeted guests as they entered the cocktail reception and silent
auction in Nichols Hall. Guests bid on over 90 auction items in categories
such as "Great Escapes,” "Date Night", "Game On!," "Sweet Child of Mine" and
"Happy Home and Hostess." This year also featured a chance to win a new, eco-
friendly LX 50 Vespa by purchasing raffle tickets that support Fund-A-Need at
the Garden. Auctioneers Amanda Puck and Brice Cooper road the Vespa into the
tent on the Esplanade to announce the beginning of the live auction and dinner
portion of the evening.
Cooper and Puck auctioned off lavish vacation packages, including a week in a
private house for up to 16 people in Nantucket, Massachusetts with access to
golf, wine and a whaling museum; a four-night stay for four at the Hillsboro
Club in Florida; three days of unlimited golf for four at the Bandon Dunes in
Oregon; and the ultimate Chicago Blackhawks game package for four featuring a
ride on the Zamboni for one lucky guest.
Hors d'oeuvres and dinner, prepared by Calihan Catering, featured hardy
comfort food followed by dancing to Lynne Jordan and The Shivers. Flowers and
stunning tablescapes of purple and green wildflowers staged throughout the
tent were designed by Botanicals.
The annual Ball, attended by more than 500 of Chicago’s civic leaders, has
raised more than $2.2 million to date for the Garden’s education,
environmental and children’s programs. Established in 1998, the Guild supports
the Garden through service projects, as well as fund-raising events. Led by
co-presidents Joe Brickman of Lake Forest and Gloria Masterson of Kenilworth,
the group has more than 100 members representing a diverse collection of young
leaders from the Chicago area.
Support for the Harvest Ball was provided by American Airlines, Chalet
Landscape-Nursery-Garden Center, Chicago Home + Garden, GoodTrueBeautiful,
Inc. and Moët & Chandon.
