On Tuesday, May 22, 2012, Audubon members, chairmen, supporters as well as members of “Women Greening the City” gathered to celebrate the 9th Annual National Audubon Society’s Women in Conservation Luncheon. Guests assembled at The Plaza Hotel to support this year’s honorees, which included The Rev. Canon Sally Bingham, President of The Regeneration Project / Interfaith Power and Light, L. Hunter Lovins, President of Natural Capitalism Solutions, and Janette Sadik-Khan, Commissioner of New York City Department of Transportation. Each of these outstanding women were each awarded with the prestigious Rachel Carson award for their notable work in the environmental and conservation movement. Other notable guests included Allison Rockefeller, the Founding Chair of the Rachel Carson Award Council, David Yarnold, Audubon’s President & CEO, Nicole Miller, Fashion Designer, David Byrne, of the Talking Heads and emcee Anne Thompson, environmental affairs correspondent for NBC News.
Since its inception, Audubon’s Rachel Carson Award has raised more than $1,000,000 to support Audubon’s campaign to protect the Long Island Sound as well as Audubon’s Women in Conservation Program, which educates and engages women in conservation and environmental issues. In addition to honoring the efforts of these influential women, Audubon this year also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Silent Spring, a revolutionary work that shed light on the damage inflicted by the indiscriminate use of pesticides, and whose author, Rachel Carson, is the inspiration for the prestigious award.
