On May 8, 2012, Ailey made a triumphant return to Harlem’s world-famous Apollo Theater for a one-night-only event, the 10th Annual Ailey at the Apollo Spring Gala which featured performances by artists of the world renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, dynamic students of The Ailey School and young AileyCampers.
The benefit, honoring board member Leslie Maheras and her husband Thomas Maheras, raised a record breaking 1 million dollars for student scholarships to The Ailey School and the Ailey organization’s Arts In Education & Community Programs, including AileyCamp Washington Heights. Artistic Director Robert Battle welcomed Honorary Chair Toni Braxton and 900 guests, including Anthony M. Carvette, Marc Strachan, Loraine Boyle, David E. Monn, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Susan Fales-Hill, Jonelle Procope, Terry Lundgren, Amsale Aberra, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Bevy Smith, Boardwalk Empire’s Justin Davis, Danny Meyer, Henry McGee and Joan & Sandy Weill. Attendees danced the night away at the post performance party which featured music by DJ Ruckus and the shining lights of the Studio 54 mirror ball.
