On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, American Ballet Theatre celebrated its return to New York City Center with its Fall 2011 Opening Night Gala. The evening featured the New York City premiere of a new work by Demis Volpi, Martha Clarke’s The Garden of Villandry and Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room. The program also featured Tharp’s Sinatra Suite, a suite of dances from Nine Sinatra Songs, set to classic songs by Frank Sinatra with costumes by Oscar de la Renta. The evening honored Matthew Rubel with The Melville Straus Leadership Achievement Award. An elegant black tie dinner dance at The Plaza Hotelimmediately followed the performance, with music by Timo and Alan. Gift bags were provided by Sprinkles Cupcakes.
