Background:
Former fashion designer Richard Mishaan hasn't had the most linear career path, but he's ended up exactly where he always wanted to be. The head of his New York-based interior design/architecture firm, he's currently working on several residential and commercial projects and expanding a collection of furniture he introduced at last spring's Kips Bay Decorator Show house. Mishaan proudly refers to the collection as "couture"-as opposed to mass-market-and designers such as Thierry Despont, Thad Hayes, and Jeffery Bilhuber seem to agree: they've already snapped up pieces for their projects.
Mishaan studied architecture at Columbia University and apprenticed with Philip Johnson, but a stagnant construction market induced him to flee to Seventh Avenue, where he landed a job designing classic men's and women's sportswear. After a successful decade in fashion, he returned to Columbia for a master's degree in finance and real-estate development. In 1993, he opened his office/showroom in a tiny but tailored Fifth Avenue aerie with soaring views.
