Lens on the Photographer

Ten years in the making, Magnum Stories (Phaidon; $79.95) provides a visual history of photojournalism in the 20th century by celebrating the work of 61 master photographers from the international photographic agency Magnum. In a series of fascinating interviews with noted photographers such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Susan Meiselas, editor Chris Boot explores their individual approaches to taking and editing photos.

Garden Culture

In The Most Beautiful Gardens in the World (Abrams; $60), photographer Alain Le Toquin dazzles the reader with stunning photographs of 32 of the world's most visually arresting gardens. Their diversity reflects not only the landscape of their environments but also the different traditions and cultures that created them. Among the highlights are the ornamental gardens at Villandry in France, the ancient gardens of the Kyoto temples in Japan and the famous gardens of Versailles photographed during winter.
